Joseph came to the United States from Luzern, Switzerland, in 1816, with his wife and daughter, aboard the ship Amphtrit. While traveling to America, wife Josephine Ernst gave birth to another daughter, Josephine Anthriantrite Affantranger. * */* 

The name in Switzerland is spelled AFFENTRANGER for the Canton of Luzern. *//

Joseph was a prominent and respected man in the community. He opened and owned the only tavern in the township. It was on the road to Conneaut Lake, about three miles from town and housed in a frame building.

The first newspaper article about Joseph concerned a stray cow-and was in The Messanger, (an early Meadville newspaper.)**
